Airborne ambitions: The Bahamas’ bold expansion of island airport

From the northern tip of Bimini to the southern shores of Inagua, the skies over The Bahamas are buzzing with transformation. A sweeping airport redevelopment effort is now underway, one that promises to reshape connectivity across the nation and usher in a new era for Family Islands travel.

Launched on July 1, 2023, the Family Islands Renaissance Project has planned landmark upgrades across 23 aerodromes.

“This represents the largest investment in Family Islands airport infrastructure ever made by any government in Bahamian history,” said Prime Minister, The Honourable Philip E. Davis.

From runway renovations to new terminals and technology upgrades, the scope is as ambitious as the archipelago itself. And the goal is clear: to create airports of the future that are modern, safe, sustainable, and proudly Bahamian.

“Airlines, passengers and cargo require safe, efficient and affordable airport infrastructure to sustain their operations,” explained Dr. Kenneth Romer, director of aviation and deputy director general of tourism.
“Through partnerships with private stakeholders, government authorities and local communities, we are developing best-in-class infrastructure...based on new technologies, cultural authenticity and our commitment to sustainability, resilience and creating entrepreneurial opportunities.”

Beyond better travel experiences, the project is positioned as a catalyst for economic revitalization in the Family Islands, creating jobs, stimulating small business, and strengthening tourism potential.

The list of airports slated for development is extensive. Some will see brand-new terminals, and others will undergo critical airside remediation. With completion targets running through 2027, the vision for this inter-island aviation network is clear: the sky is no longer the limit.
